The Camden Green Fair is held on the first Sunday in June each year, to coincide with World Environment Day and London Sustainability Weeks.

The Fair aims to inspire Londoners to help make their capital a world-class Green City, letting visitors find out about the huge and growing number of sustainable companies, products, campaigns, and lifestyle choices that are available to us all, every day.

- Fair Development

The Camden Green Fair is now in its 17th year. It was started as a local event by a group of people from Camden, with the aim of raising awareness within their community of various environmental issues. Since its relatively small beginnings the Council have become involved and the fair has grown year on year, and is now the UK’s largest free green event.

Surprisingly, although it has grown so much and now attracts some 25,000 people throughout the day, the Fair is still very much lead by the community and the individuals who sit on the Delivery Team.

- How Green is the Green Fair?

There are five main areas where we are able to control our environmental impact:
waste, transport, energy, procurement and water.

Waste: Recycling

We are trying to recycle as much as we can to reduce the waste from the Fair. We need your help. We will place recycling and landfill bins throughout the site and volunteers will be on-hand if you’re not quite sure which wrapper goes in which bin! There aren’t as many different bins as we’d like but every year we try to do a bit more, so please bare (or bear?) with us. Stallholders have been encouraged to use thoughtful wrapping and to avoid materials that we can’t recycle. Please help us to recycle as much as possible.

More information can be found on the Camden website and from Recycle Now.

Waste: Composting

We work with catering stallholders to separate and collect all compostable waste.  Our volunteers are working with Aardvark Recycling, a London-based social enterprise, who will make compost from the organic waste to enrich people’s gardens.

Why composting?

Throwing a glass bottle into landfill is wasteful, but throwing an apple-core into landfill is worse. Organic waste like food or garden trimmings do not breakdown naturally into compost when they are thrown away in landfill. Because of the lack of oxygen, they rot and give off methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide! By composting we can reduce the organic waste that ends up in landfill, and promote healthy soils. Everyone can compost at home, even without a garden. Visit the compost information tent or talk to compost experts in the GreenHouse garden when you visit the fair.

Transport

The Bikefest and Low Mission Vehicle Zone will teach visitors about what they can do to reduce the impact of their personal transport. We encourage all visitors to come by public transport or by bikes and we supply a secure place to lock your bike on Chester Road!

Energy

Our whole site is powered only by renewable energy. We have solar and wind power providing energy for the stages, as well as hydrogen fuel cells to provide site power and stallholders are banned from using generators. You may also spot various pedal-powered machines about the site including a pedal-powered washing machine.

Procurement

This is all about the ‘purchase-power’ we have as a Fair. Much of this is demonstrated in choices about the power for the site and the types of businesses we invite to take part in the Fair. We only use recycled paper in our merchandising and our GreenHouse installation has been made from the greenest materials we could afford (we’re afraid it’s not perfect yet, but every year we think the exhibition will get greener and greener!) We are developing a strict Green Housekeeping policy for all procurement relating to the Fair.

Water

Water used by stallholders is transported in reusable containers across the site on Rickshaws from Velorution. We will provide information to visitors on how to reduce their own water consumption and on how to keep a healthy garden in drier conditions.
